Supplies:

  • Tombow Fudenosuke Colors
  • Sketchbook, I'm using Tombow's Exclusive Dot Grid Journal
  • Tombow MONO Graph Mechanical Pencil
  • Tombow MONO Light Eraser

Tip one:

Use thick and thin lines to create visual interest. The best part about drawing with brush pens is the ability to change up the pressure, so use that to your advantage. Try using lighter pressure to get fine lines for the smaller details.

Use thicker lines for the outlines and main elements of your drawing to really make it stand out.

Tip two:

Hold the Fudenosuke Brush Pen however it feels natural to you! I hold it the same way I would hold a pencil, or do any lettering. The most important thing is to be comfortable with it.

Tip three:

Vary the color. The Fudenosuke Colors come with 10 different color options: Black, Gray, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Pink and Brown.

For this drawing example I used different colors for different parts of the design, such as red for the flower petals, green leaves, etc.

Tip four:

Try cross hatching and other filler patterns. I like cross hatching with a brush pen, the flexible brush tip makes it easy to have smooth tapered lines that make a good filler pattern, as I did in the leaves below. Try hatching, cross-hatching, squiggles, etc.

Tip five:

If you started with a pencil sketch, like I did, erase your lines using a MONO Light Eraser. Tombow's erasers are pretty amazing, they can actually erase pencil lines through the marker ink.

Bonus Tip!

One more thing to consider is paper! Paper can make a big difference. Experiment and find a paper you like the best. I recommend a smooth, non-textured paper.
